Canary care guide

A listening bird, not a handling bird; light cycle drives song and moulting. Core husbandry follows the same pattern as the budgie (parakeet) — with the differences called out below.

How to keep a Canary

The daily work — feeding, cleaning, handling and routine — follows the budgie (parakeet) pattern:

  • Width beats height: budgies fly horizontally. A pair needs at least 18×18×24 in, and more is always better.
  • Bar spacing of about 1/2 inch prevents escapes and head-trapping.
  • Feeding: Fresh food daily, pellets available throughout the day, seed as a smaller part of the diet.
  • Replace cage liner daily.
  • Wash food and water dishes daily.
  • Approach slowly and speak; sudden movements break trust quickly.
  • Hand-taming is best done by offering millet through the bars first, then from your hand.

Life stages

Young (0–6 months)

Best window for taming, learning to eat pellets and veg, lots of gentle handling.

Adult (6 months–7 years)

Stable diet, daily interaction, regular flight time.

Senior (7+ years)

Easier cage access, lower perches, watch for weight change and feather condition.
