Budgie (Parakeet) care sheet

Small, social and vocal — a bird that needs daily interaction and horizontal space. This is the complete budgie (parakeet) care guide: housing, feeding, cleaning, routine, handling, life stages and the setup checklist.

Quick facts

Typical lifespan
7–15 years
Adult size
7 inches, 1–1.4 oz
Cage size (pair)
18×18×24 in minimum; width matters most
Social
Very — needs a companion or daily interaction
Out-of-cage time
1–2 hours daily is ideal

Environment: 65–80°F (18–27°C). Humidity 40–60%. 10–12 hours of daylight; full darkness to sleep. Activity: Diurnal. Diet: Granivore — pellets, seed mix, fresh veg.

Housing & setup

  • Width beats height: budgies fly horizontally. A pair needs at least 18×18×24 in, and more is always better.
  • Bar spacing of about 1/2 inch prevents escapes and head-trapping.
  • Place the cage against a wall in a busy but draft-free room — social but secure.
  • Provide natural wood perches of varying diameters; dowel-only perches cause foot problems over time.

Feeding

How often: Fresh food daily, pellets available throughout the day, seed as a smaller part of the diet.

How much: Around 1.5–2 teaspoons of pellets or seed per bird per day, plus a tablespoon of chopped greens or veg.

  • An all-seed diet is the classic mistake — it is too fatty. Pellets plus fresh food is the healthier base.
  • Fresh water daily, changed more often in warm weather.
  • Safe vegetables: leafy greens, carrot, broccoli, a little apple. Never avocado, chocolate, caffeine or onion.
  • Offer a cuttlebone or mineral block for calcium.

Cleaning & hygiene

  • Replace cage liner daily.
  • Wash food and water dishes daily.
  • Wipe perches and bars weekly.
  • Full cage clean and disinfect every 2–4 weeks.
  • Never use non-stick cookware, scented candles or aerosol sprays near birds — their respiratory systems are extremely sensitive.

Care routine

Daily

  • Fresh food and water
  • Change liner
  • Out-of-cage social or flight time
  • Cover or darken for 10–12 hours of sleep

Weekly

  • Wipe perches and bars
  • Rotate toys
  • Wash dishes thoroughly

Monthly

  • Full cage clean
  • Check nails, beak and feathers
  • Weigh — a kitchen scale works for a budgie

Handling

  • Approach slowly and speak; sudden movements break trust quickly.
  • Hand-taming is best done by offering millet through the bars first, then from your hand.
  • Never grab or squeeze a bird — support the feet on your finger instead.
  • Watch for a pinned-eyed, fluffed or hissing bird: that means back off.

Life stages

Young (0–6 months)

Best window for taming, learning to eat pellets and veg, lots of gentle handling.

Adult (6 months–7 years)

Stable diet, daily interaction, regular flight time.

Senior (7+ years)

Easier cage access, lower perches, watch for weight change and feather condition.

Setup checklist

Everything you want in place before your budgie (parakeet) comes home:

  • Wide cage (18×18×24 in minimum for a pair)
  • Natural wood perches of mixed diameters
  • Pellets plus a seed mix and fresh veg
  • Cuttlebone or mineral block
  • Several toys, rotated weekly
  • Cage liners and bird-safe cleaner
  • A travel carrier for vet visits

Not veterinary advice. This guide covers husbandry — housing, feeding, cleaning and handling. If your animal is injured, lethargic, off food for an unusual length of time or behaving abnormally, contact a veterinarian.

Frequently asked questions

Do budgies need a companion?

They are flock animals. A same-species companion, or an hour or two of genuine daily interaction from you, is necessary — a lone bird left in a quiet room tends to develop feather-plucking and screaming.

Is a seed-only diet OK?

No. Seeds are too fatty and deficient as a sole diet. Move toward pellets as the base with seed as a treat or supplement, plus daily vegetables.

How long should a budgie sleep?

Around 10–12 hours of quiet darkness. Covering the cage or moving it to a dark room keeps hormones and behaviour stable.
