How to Properly Raise Humidity in Your Guinea Pig's Cage?

Maintain a humidity range of 40–60% to keep your guinea pig healthy and comfortable. Here's how to do it.

Target Humidity and Temperature Settings

Keep the basking/warm side of the cage at 75–80°F (24–27°C) and the cool side at 65–70°F (18–21°C). Aim for a cage humidity of 40–60%.

Guinea pigs are small, sensitive creatures that rely on a controlled environment to regulate their body temperature. They can't regulate their body temperature internally like larger animals, so providing a gradient is crucial.

  • Basking side: 75–80°F (24–27°C)
  • Cool side: 65–70°F (18–21°C)
  • Cage humidity: 40–60%

Controlling Temperature

Use a heat lamp on the basking side of the cage, positioned 12–18 inches above the ground. Adjust the lamp's wattage to maintain the desired temperature.

Monitor the temperature at the guinea pig's level, not from a distance. This ensures they are comfortable.

  • Heat lamp: 12–18 inches above ground
  • Wattage: Adjust to maintain 75–80°F (24–27°C)
  • Monitor temperature at guinea pig level

Raising Humidity

Increase humidity by using a water dish filled with water on the cool side of the cage. The water dish should be large enough to provide a shallow pool for the guinea pigs to drink from and bathe in.

Use a humidifier in the room if the humidity is consistently below 40%. Place it near the cage but not directly above it to avoid water dripping onto the guinea pigs.

  • Water dish: On the cool side, large enough for a shallow pool
  • Humidifier: Use if room humidity is below 40%
  • Position: Near the cage, not directly above

Lighting

Provide a 12-hour light cycle for your guinea pigs. Use a timer to ensure consistency.

Natural light is beneficial, so position the cage near a window if possible. However, ensure the cage is not in direct sunlight to prevent overheating.

  • Light cycle: 12 hours
  • Timer: Use to maintain consistency
  • Natural light: Beneficial if not in direct sunlight

Observable Signs of Imbalance

If the humidity is too low, your guinea pig may develop respiratory issues or become more susceptible to colds. Look for signs like sneezing, coughing, or a runny nose.

If the humidity is too high, the cage may develop mold, and your guinea pig may develop skin issues or respiratory problems. Keep an eye out for signs like excessive scratching, hair loss, or respiratory distress.

  • Low humidity: Respiratory issues, colds
  • High humidity: Mold, skin issues, respiratory problems
  • Signs to watch for: Sneezing, coughing, scratching, hair loss
