How to keep a Kingsnake

The daily work — feeding, cleaning, handling and routine — follows the corn snake pattern:

  • A 4×2×2 ft enclosure suits an adult; corn snakes are active climbers and use vertical space and branches well.
  • Provide two hides plus branches and artificial plants — this species spends more time out in the open than a ball python, but still needs cover.
  • Feeding: Hatchlings every 5–7 days; juveniles every 7–10 days; adults every 10–14 days.
  • Spot-clean daily while active.
  • Change substrate every 4–6 weeks.
  • Support the body with both hands and let them move through your hands.
  • Move slowly and confidently; fast grabs startle them.

Life stages

Hatchling

Pinky mice every 5–7 days; secure enclosure with tight-fitting lid — escape is the number one hatchling problem.

Juvenile

Prey size steps up from pinky to fuzzy to hopper; feeding every 7–10 days.

Adult

Adult mice every 10–14 days; full-size enclosure with climbing structure.

Setup checklist

  • Secure 4×2×2 ft enclosure with clips or locks
  • Thermostat-controlled heat source
  • Two hides plus branches and cover
  • Digital thermometers at both ends
  • Aspen or similar substrate
