How to keep a African Pygmy Hedgehog
The daily work — feeding, cleaning, handling and routine — follows the syrian hamster pattern:
- Aim for at least 450 sq in of unbroken floor space, and prefer 600+. Bin cages and large glass tanks work well.
- Deep bedding — 6 inches or more — so they can burrow. This is a core need, not decoration.
- Feeding: A measured portion once a day, in the evening when they wake.
- Spot-clean the toilet corner every few days.
- Replace soiled bedding weekly; do a full clean every 2–4 weeks and keep some old bedding to reduce stress.
- Wake them gently in the evening; never grab a sleeping hamster.
- Cup them with two hands rather than picking up from above.
Life stages
Young (0–3 months)
Fast growth, high energy, best time to build trust through hand-feeding.
Adult (3 months–18 months)
Stable routine, full burrow depth, consistent evening activity.
Senior (18 months+)
Slower movement, thinner coat, easier cage access, softer bedding.
