How to keep a Ferret

The daily work — feeding, cleaning, handling and routine — follows the syrian hamster pattern:

  • Aim for at least 450 sq in of unbroken floor space, and prefer 600+. Bin cages and large glass tanks work well.
  • Deep bedding — 6 inches or more — so they can burrow. This is a core need, not decoration.
  • Feeding: A measured portion once a day, in the evening when they wake.
  • Spot-clean the toilet corner every few days.
  • Replace soiled bedding weekly; do a full clean every 2–4 weeks and keep some old bedding to reduce stress.
  • Wake them gently in the evening; never grab a sleeping hamster.
  • Cup them with two hands rather than picking up from above.

Life stages

Young (0–3 months)

Fast growth, high energy, best time to build trust through hand-feeding.

Adult (3 months–18 months)

Stable routine, full burrow depth, consistent evening activity.

Senior (18 months+)

Slower movement, thinner coat, easier cage access, softer bedding.

Setup checklist

  • Cage with 450+ sq in unbroken floor space
  • 6+ inches of burrow-safe bedding
  • 8–12 inch solid-surface wheel
  • Sand bath and sand
  • Hideout and chew toys
  • Water bottle or heavy bowl
  • Balanced food mix and a measuring spoon
