What should I consider for my puppy's initial setup?

From the first month, your puppy's space needs to be secure, comfortable, and stimulating. Here's how to create the perfect environment.

Newborn to 4 Weeks

During the first month, your puppy will be in a critical stage of development. The space should be quiet, warm, and free from distractions. Aim for a temperature of 70–75°F (21–24°C) to ensure they stay cozy.

Provide a small, enclosed area with a soft, warm bed. A whelping box or a puppy pen can be ideal. The space should be no larger than 10 square feet to prevent the puppy from wandering too far and getting lost.

  • Keep the room temperature at 70–75°F (21–24°C)
  • Use a small, enclosed area of 10 square feet
  • Provide a soft, warm bed
  • Avoid loud noises and excessive activity

4–8 Weeks

As your puppy grows, they'll start to explore more. At this stage, you can gradually increase the space to about 20 square feet. Introduce a litter box if you plan to train them to use it.

Maintain a consistent feeding schedule, offering food 3–4 times a day. Use a shallow bowl to prevent spills and make it easier for them to eat.

8–12 Weeks

By this stage, your puppy should be able to handle a larger space of up to 30 square feet. Provide a variety of toys to keep them entertained and stimulated.

Continue with the 3–4 times a day feeding schedule, adjusting portion sizes as needed. Monitor their weight and adjust food intake accordingly.

12–16 Weeks

Your puppy is now ready for a full 40 square feet of space. This allows them to move around more freely and explore their surroundings. Introduce regular walks and play sessions to help with socialization.

Maintain the 3–4 times a day feeding schedule, ensuring they have access to fresh water at all times.
